What is arbutin
Arbutin (arbutin) is a natural derivative of hydroquinone (the most powerful active ingredient that is used for depigmentation processes of the skin under medical prescription). It is used in cosmetics because it has been shown that arbutin is better tolerated than hydroquinone.
For this reason, arbutin, as it is recognized in the INCIs is one of the most chosen options in intensive treatments to avoid hyperpigmentation throughout the year.
Where does the arbutin come from?
As we have said, arbutin has a natural origin, being obtained from fruits such as blackberries or blueberries. However, it has been proven that the leaves of the bearberry have a high concentration.
Currently, it is obtained synthetically through chemical synthesis or by a process catalyzed by enzymes.
Is arbutin the same as alpha-arbutin?
Yes, in INCIs it can be found as arbutin (arbutin) or alpha arbutin (alpha-arbutin).
How Alpha Arbutin Works
As I always tell you, I prefer to leave the more technical explanations to professional chemists or pharmacists. But so that we understand each other, arbutin inhibits the activity of tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in the production of melanin) and therefore is capable of depigmenting spots.
Cosmetic properties of arbutin
So we can affirm that the most outstanding property and the clearest benefit that alpha-arbutin or arbutin has is its depigmenting power.
Depigmenting properties
It is used in cases of melasma, lentigo, or freckles, whether caused by sun exposure, contraceptives, or pregnancy. Therefore, it is a great ally against blemishes, clarifying them and greatly improving the appearance of the skin.
It clearly unifies the tone of the epidermis and if the spots are not very intense it is proven that they can even disappear, as long as a continuous treatment of at least 4 months is carried out and whenever sun protection is used regularly, with its subsequent reapplication every two hours.
Arbutin concentrations in cosmetics
The usual concentrations in which we usually find arbutin in formulas is 2 to 5% and always accompanied by other ingredients with which it enhances its activity or extends other benefits.
Arbutin creams
There are other depigmenting agents such as kojic acid that are also often found in creams or cosmetics along with alpha arbutin. The synergy of this active ingredient is excellent with more components such as glycolic acid, antioxidants, or with hyaluronic acid.
If you want to know the creams with alpha arbutin or cosmetics that contain them so that you can use them in your skincare routines, you just have to subscribe to the Cosmetics on the Trial newsletter and you will receive in the mail all the products that I recommend.
